ReplyDeleteQuite honestly, I'm here because i did not want to take Child Development this period, and this was my alternative. However, I'm excited about this class because I haven't had Mr. Yip as a teacher since sophomore year, and it's nice to walk into T10 again without being kicked out for not having a pass. In all seriousness, I am taking this class as a way to learn more about why humans act in the bizarre ways that they do. This desire to learn about behavior and personality stems not from a mere desire or a whim, but instead from my intended career path: that of a writer.
ReplyDeleteAs any great English teacher could tell you, the most memorable characters in, well, anything at all, are so because they are believable. Be it Holden Caulfield's jaded, naive perception on existence, or even the psychological collapse of Esther Greenwood in The Bell Jar, the most memorable characters exist because we see ourselves in them. Holden Caulfield speaks to the child refusing to grow up in all of us, and Esther's breakdown, modeled after the actual depressive spiraling of the author, Sylvia Plath, is understood authentically by anyone who battles depression and mental illness. A truly powerful and moving character is so because they behave, think, and exist authentically. A feat, while assumed easy by non-writers, is actually pretty damn difficult. While yes, intrinsic talent and intuitive emotional understanding are necessary to write well, it just seems like a good idea to have some general classroom knowledge of behavioral psychology, almost as an extra gadget in the utility belt, if you will. I'm certainly going to need all of the help i can get, if I dont want to wait tables for the rest of my life.

ReplyDeleteIn my junior year, I took the course sociology with Mrs. Cook. I really enjoyed learning about how the mind works in a group situation. When the class was over, I wanted to learn more about the individual mental processes. I have always wanted to learn more about people and how their mind works. Why do we do the things we do? Like in sociology, how do groups affect the individuals thought process? I just want to know more about other people’s minds and also mine. What makes us think different opinions? There is so much we could learn from our mind and I hope this class will help me get closer to understanding the mind. I have always been interested in the mysterious stuff in life. The mind is a very mysterious thing and I would love to learn more about how it works. I have never thought about going into a career about psychology. If I enjoy it, I might consider it.
First of all I had Mr. Yip, for Warmongers and Peacemakers, as a teacher last year and I really enjoyed his teaching style and his attitude towards the subject he taught. So I thought it’d be nice to have another class with him in my senior year. Also, during Warmongers we learned many of the political/ social reasons why certain atrocities around the world. (I.e. the holocaust, the Cambodian genocide, etc) I wanted to take what I learned in this class and apply it to the topics covered in Warmongers. To see if there was a deeper logic in the minds of “evil” world leaders then normally portrayed. To see if there was any reason left in their minds or if they were simply mentally cracked.
ReplyDeleteThe other thing that really interests me about a psychology course is to learn about the little nuisances of human behavior. What causes a person to do what they do? Why do we make the decisions that we make on a daily basis? To attempt to apply a theory of order to the seemingly endless chaos of human thought seems like an impossible task. So I want to look into the work of those who have attempted to do so and understand what they were trying to accomplish by continuing in their work.

ReplyDeleteim here to learn how people think and why they think like this. im not taking psych as a major in college but i want to pursue in a field that has a lot of creativity. so i would like to learn how people think and create these things. psych looks interesting and i like a class where theres a fun environment to learn and go into depth on subjects like psych goes into depth of the human mind.

ReplyDeleteMr.Yip, I have heard left and right about your teaching reputation, and honestly I must say that it is an honor to have such an educated and humerus individual as yourself as my teacher. It was my own choice to join the psychology class. Ever since I can remember I've been so fascinated to understand many things psychologically. For instance, why people react as they do and why they do the things that they do.
The mind is a very powerful device, it not only manipulates others, but sometimes manipulates ourselves. Or should I say, tricks us?
What about that little voice in our heads that's suppose to be called our conscious? Is that natural human nature for us to subliminally converse with ourselves, or do we receive messages in our minds that come from a much greater intellectual structure? Where does our intuition come from, and why do we think the way we do?
As you can see I have many questions that I'd love to get the answers for. The mind has always been a great mystery to me, including my own. Maybe if I took this class I could get a better understanding of many things, including how my brain works. I want to know psychologically what contributes to the mind of a serial killer. Are these people seriously tapped, or is there a logical explanation behind it? There is no moral in murdering another human being, however killers are people too. Maybe if we took time to understand people a little better the world wouldn't be the way it is today.
Im in the class because i find it interesting in learning about human nature. Sounds like a fun experience that provides skills that can be used in the future.

ReplyDeleteWhy am i here do you ask? I'm here because in all my years in high school, which is 3 years and 1 day, i have heard nothing but good things about psychology. Also, i have been semi interested in psychology for a while and wanted to finally take a class about it...and my sister said Mr. Yip is the best so i had to see for myself
Lara
ReplyDeletePsychology is a class I have been interested in taking since my freshman year. Not only for the whole epic Mr. Yip experience, but to truly gain a greater understanding of why we think the way we do. Psychology is an important topic to understand mostly because it will play some sort of part no matter what career path you should choose to take. Whether it would be to understand the personality of a fellow colleague, or to interpret the personality of someone you may not be familiar with. Although I do not plan on majoring in psychology, I believe it will be a useful tool for me in the business world, especially seeing as I plan to study International Business/ Foreign Affairs. From this class, I hope to gain a general understanding of psychology and really understand why people function in a specific manor, and also to enjoy a class with “yip the great”.

ReplyDeleteI am here because I have heard a lot of good stuff about the class it self, on top of everyone loving Mr. Yip as a teacher. I have been interested in psychology for a while now and decided to act upon it. Learning the "why" or the reasoning behind everyone's every move is intriguing to me. I have been considering further pursuing it in college, but am not positive yet. The class sounds like a lot of fun and an interesting experience.
To be entirely honest, Mr. Yip, I'm not too certain why I'm in this class. I didn't exactly choose to be in it, but after the first day of school, I'm excited and I look forward to spending period E in Psychology for the first semester.

ReplyDeleteI'm here because i've always wanted to know more about people and how their minds work, and why they do the things that they do. I've always wondered what goes through a persons mind while they're either makeing an every day decision, to committing a crime. I'm not too sure what I want to do in college, or even what I want to do for the rest of my life, but I do know that i've always been interested in psycology. Instead of being the idiot always trying to figure people and their actions out, I hope this class can give me an explanation.

I am here because I thought it would be an interesting elective to take. My teacher assistant has a degree in psychology and she makes it sound interesting, so I'd like to learn for myself!

ReplyDeleteI am here because I have always been interested in psychology. I find it fascinating the way people act and why they do the things they do. I'm the type of person who people watches, so I love to look at the weird, amazing, funny, and crazy things some people do. I hope to better understand what really goes on in people's heads and what makes them behave the way they do.
I signed up for this class because I am very interested in why people do the things we do, and why I do the things I do for that matter. I have anxiety and I believe it will be good for me to understand where that comes from, what triggers it and what’s going on when I feel anxious. Hopefully having this class under my belt with be good for me in the long run I’m taking this class along with Forensics and Criminal Justice because I plan on doing something with psychology whether that be a Police Officer or a Forensic Scientist.
ReplyDeleteI have two motives for taking this class. firstly, i have never taken a class with Yip the Great as a teacher before. I missed out on this wonderful experience freshman year, so i'm compensating by taking both psychology and warmongerers period E with Mr. Yip.
ReplyDeletesecondly, i'm interested in taking highschool psychology because i'm interested by the human condition. In college i plan to major in biology or a closely related sciencce, so psychology might not be essential to my academic pursuits, however the information i will gain about human interaction from this class will be invaluable in college and in my career to follow
-Luke Creamer
Mr. Yip I took this class because I had taken warmongers and that was my favorite class I have ever taken at the high school. I have heard good things about this psychology class and decided it would be a great choice. I want to broaden my understanding of psychology itself because I find the topic interesting and want to understand the reasons why people do the things they do. I feel as though I am going to have a great time this semester and I will like every bit of this class and take as much out of it as I can.

ReplyDeleteI have chosen to take psychology mainly because it is not a generic class offered at our high school such as the every day science, math, and english courses. I thought this class would be different, interesting and most of all fun.
Secondly having my sister take ap psychology really influenced me to take this course. She recommended that i take psychology my junior year. My mom also majored in psychology so she also played a large role in me signing up for this class.
I would like to learn why we behave and react to certain situations. What makes us feel the way we do when someone either hurts our feelings or when we hurt theirs? Their are a lot of these types of questions in my head that i would hope get answered by completing this course.
The reason I chose to sign up for phsycology class was because I know a lot of students who have taken it in the past and have enjoyed it. I have also wanted to take the class since last year, but it couldn't fit into my schedule, I look foward to learning about why we think the way we do. Even though I am not planning on becoming a phsycology major, I do believe this class will be helpful for me when I go onto college and study Education as my major. Not to mention, the teacher is hilarious.
ReplyDelete-Marissa Nero
I didnt choose this class as my first elective, I was actually in PreCal and by the second day I wanted to rip my hair out and since I tried to take phsyc last year but the changed my schedule I decided to take it now.
ReplyDeleteThis might sound goofy but I love watching Criminal Minds and all that stuff which is what has been motivaiting me to take a class to learn why people do certain things and what causes them to act out the way they do. I have alot of intrest in Phsycology and I want to continue it even after I leave schoool and study child phsycology.
So, I figured why not take it now with the best teacher there is then wait for college : )

ReplyDeleteI'm here because thought processes have always interested me, not only the chemical and bioligcal apects of it but more the philisophical angle of it. i've always wanted to persue psycology as a career, more specifically i want to work with people, so that i can help them cope with their emotions. but i really want to work with minoritys, particularly children, because i feel as though there are not enough minority psycologists specifically latino, creole or blacks and this is a huge demographic that i feel needs it the most, from what i'v come to understand with my own experiences of one on one psycology it takes mutual understanding to help people, and to many people something as trivial as race and ethnicity can aid that understanding.
Brian Godin,
ReplyDeleteI am here because I am deciding between being a psychologist or a veterinarian. If I take this course I will have some knowledge under my belt.
Mr. Yip,
ReplyDeleteI am here because I am intrigued by the human thought process. I am extremely interested in why humans behave the way that they do. I have thought of pursuing a career in psychology but decided instead to work more in the medical field. Even though my future will not involve a career in psychology I was still interested in it extremely.

I'm in this class because I've always been interested in how the mind works and why we do the things we do. I'm always wondering what goes through people's minds on a deeper level, whether they're doing an every day task, or committing a crime. I've been thinking about going into psychology as a career, but I'm also thinking about going into visual arts. Maybe I could do something with them combined.
ReplyDeleteMr.Yip,
ReplyDeleteI am in this class because psychology has always been a topic that I have thought to be interesting. This year I am taking various courses in order to see what I would like to do as a career for the rest of my life. I am taking a forensic psychology course on virtual high school and thought that it would be a good idea to take regular psychology as well. Another reason is because my brother Eric is studying nursing and has to take psychology as a required course. He took the class with you his senior year two years ago and said he loved it and that it was an excellent class to take. I took his advice and signed up for the course.

ReplyDeleteMr. Yip,
I enrolled in this class because I have always been interested in psychology. Throughout my first 3 years at LHS, I had taken multiple criminal classes such as Criminal Justice and Forensic science, and have just recently developed an interest in why people make certain decisions and their thought processes, and how people perceive different things. In addition to this, it is my senior year, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn more about a topic I am interested in, and see if it would be something I’d like to pursue in college.

ReplyDeleteWhile I am not planning on pursuing a career in the field of psychology, I am taking this class for a reason. I signed up for this course to gain a deeper understanding of the human mind. Why is it that I behave the way I do? What is the driving force behind every individual’s actions? I hope to gain answers to these questions over the course of this semester. Psychology is a class that will help me no matter what career I choose in the future; I will always be dealing with other humans. I’m hoping that this class will help me delve further into the mystery that is the human mind
On the other hand, I have been told that this is a fantastic class to take. Mr. Yip has a teaching style that is like no other. His class is not only fun and enjoyable, but also thought provoking – something that you don’t find in other classes. I can honestly say that I am looking forward to take this class.
I wrote this class as one of my choices as an elective because it was highly recommended to me by a lot of alumni as their favorite class they took in high school. This is why when i received my schedule i made sure to switch into it when i noticed i was not originally enrolled in the class. Another reason is that after taking Mr. Hallam's Hon 10 Humanities i often find myself always looking deeper into people's actions, and trying to see the reason they do what they did. I believe that this course will help me have an even better understanding of this.
ReplyDeleteI am in this class mainly for half of the social studies credit I need. However, this class was my first pick for it because my mother has a psych degree and I've inherited the passion for the human mind.
ReplyDeleteJarrod Peloquin
ReplyDeleteThe main reason i decided to take this course was because the past few years at LHS i have enjoyed the classes that i have taken where Mr. Yip was teaching. His classes always seem to be very engaging and interesting so i believe this one will be the same. I also was recommended this class by many of my friends who have taken it, including my friend Eric Macksoud who is a psychology major at Clark University. The human mind seems to be a very complex system and i think it would be interesting to learn even more about it. I however do not believe i will be taking psychology as a major in college or that i will make a career out of it.
