One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the end

React to the end of the movie. Did you like/dislike the ending? Give reasons! How would you change the ending if you could? What about the movie itself overall? Be a movie critic and tell us what was good and bad about the movie. Which characters were the most heroic, tragic, villianous?

Have fun with this post!

The end of the movie was good. I liked how it tied in the story about chiefs dad and how he threw the sink podeum through the window witch would keep the spirit of macmurphy alive in all the other patients.I also like how we found out finally the reason why chief was in there to begin with. The movie overall was a great movie. I thought the acting was great. I do not think any part of the movie was bad. The most heroic character was Macmurphy. He tought so many lessons to the patients to think for them self. He brought hope to the people of the ward. Also chief was a heroic character because he did was Macmurphy couldnt do and that was to throw the sink through the window and escape. The most tragic character is billy. He was suicidle and nurse ratched pushed him over the limit and he killed him self. The most villianous is nurse ratched. She tried to controll the people in the ward. the ward was her own skinner box. And she is the reason that billy killed him self.

  2. To be quite honest, I was not a fan of the movie for the last 20 minutes or so. I thought the rest of it was really well done and I thought that all of the actors did an amazing job replicating the mentally ill people. I felt that the movie was sort of ‘slow’ though, there was not much action and Nurse Ratched needed to be strangled to death by MacMurphy. I thought that the ending with Chief was great, but had Mr. Yip not have told us what a lobotomy was/ that MacMurphy had undergone one, I would have never known and I would have been even more confused. The story Chief told about him dad never related to MacMurphy at all in my mind. Most heroic character was MacMurphy because he was the leader of the boys, and he was new and fresh energy that was brought to the ward. Most tragic award goes to Billy, he demonstrated the saddest of situations and I sort of just felt bad for him. And finally, most villainous goes to Ratched for her cold, mundane, and condescending attitude and personality. P.S yes, I hate her if that was not obvious enough (she reminds me of my first grade teacher---minus the hair)

I would honestly concider this one of the best movies I have ever watched. It made me cry.. But I loved watching it. Cheswick was by far my favorite (By the way). I think that the movie was eye opening and I couldnt believe the things that happened during the course of it. The fact that Billy actually killed himself came out of the blue and it made me speechless. The fact that the nurse pushed that poor boy to the point where he killed himself INSIDE the hospital while under watch. You could see it in her face that she knew it was because of her and the whole sence from there on made my jaw drop. I think that the part that made me want to cry was when Chief crashhed through the window because to see all the men crying and happy was amazing. The nurse was definitly the evil in the movie, She was the reason for Billys suiside, McMurphys labotomy, and the reason all of the men in that part of the hospital are still there and still sick in the head. She was heartless when it came to treating the men and as well as she played her part, I still wanted to kill her. McMuphy.. Was definitly the hero in the movie. I didnt know if I thought it was Chief or him but without McMuphy, none of that would have been possibe. The fact that he was given a labotomy and to watch what it did to him was heatbreaking and disgusting. Even though some of the parts distubed me and amazed me, I would say it could not have been better.

  4. The end of this movie was a bit shocking. I did not think that Billy was going to commit sucide and i did not think the McMurphy was going to have a labotomy. However, i do believe this is part of what made this move so amazing. During the las 20 minutes of that movie more happened then can even be put in words. In this movie Nurse Ratchet was the real villian and i think she too realized this when Billy killed himself and McMurphy attacked her. I believe the most inspiring thing about this whole movie was the chief. He was the guy that everyone always picked on and made fun of but really he was the most sane. Therefore it was great when he broke out of the mental institution. All in all this was an amazing movie that i would not change anything about, it all fit into place perfectly making one of my all time favorite movies.

  5. I like the ending because chief finally believes in himself and breaks free of the prison. I was disappointed on how Mcmurphy had to become a vegetable. I was also disappointed on how nurse Rachet didn't die. Out of all the characters I believe nurse Rachet picked on billy the most and she's the reason he killed himself. Over all the movie was great and I believe the ending should be exactly how it is.

  6. The end was really weird but a complete shock. There was so much that happened in the end, but I definitely think it tied up the movie all together. I wish that chief didn't have to kill McMurphy, I wish it had been different. Maybe that him and McMurphy had gotten out before he got labotimized or whatever. But it had a symbolic meaning when he broke the sink and threw it through the window to escape. Because McMurphy had always tried to do that. I don't understand how chief could live with the fact that he killed two people, and I think that whole fact proves that he should be in the psych ward. I also wish Billy didn't kill himself. But if it didn't have this ending it would have been a lot different, so even though it was sad I think it tied up the movie well.

  7. the end of the movie made me hate nurse wratchet more than any other part of the movie. she murdered two of my favorite characters. first she practically screamed "KILL YOURSELF" at billy when she threatened to tell his mother that he had sex with that "professional dancer". that would be a mortifying experience for any of us, but for someone as emotionally unstable as billy, it was more than what is required to put him over the edge.

she had a much more direct role in the murder of Mac. although chief was the one that smothered his body, Mac was no longer Mac, he was a senseless bag of flesh with no mental accuity. even if chief hadn't killed him, taking a person with a social disorder and turning them into... that. that's murder.

  8. By far the end of the movie was my favorite part. It really brought out the evil in nurse rachett and showed us how the situation can go from a good party with good intentions to a suicide, an attempted murder and an actual murder. I do agree with Luke when he says mcmurphy was already dead before chief "killed" him. He was a mindless bag of flesh. I would've liked to see mcmurphy escape or atleast killed nurse ratchett before his lobotomy but atleast chief escaped and gave the others hope and symbolically brought mcmurphy with him. The last 20 minutes was the best part of the movie to me and showed how one person can affect the rest in such a profound way.

  9. I thought the end of the movie was awesome. I thought when McMurphy was walking to his bed with the two guards that he was just faking like he did earlier in the movie. It was shocking to find out that chief could actually talk. Then when he threw the sink through the window it was awesome. It was a perfect way for chief to escape because that's exactly how McMurphy tried to escape in the beginning. Overall the movie was really well put together. You can't compare the acting back in that day to the terrible acting of today

I was very skeptical that this movie would open my eyes and change my views about psychology and mental institutuions, but it truly did. Treatments used in the early 60's were barbaric, but very common. McMurphy's "shock therapy" and labotomy was frightening and sad. This movie really opens up a question as to if everyone in that hospital was truly insane. Despite Mr. Yip's belief that Billy was the only one who was insane, I disagree. I believe anyone put into an institution where they are treated like an animal, and not like a human can become depressed and suicidal from their environment. We never were told each patient's story as to why they were in there, so we can only infer. But perhaps Billy was put into that hospital for another reason. Given the circumstances, I believe anyone would do what Billy did. You don't know if/when you're going to get out of the hospital, if someone's going to labotomize or give you shock treatment, you have no say in what your daily routine is, among many other things. All you know is what the nurses tell you, and on top of that, Nurse Rachet was not the most helpful of hospital staff out there. Once she found McMurphy a threat, she brutally treated him, not to "help him" but to "teach him a lesson", she is corrupt and does not belong in a health care profession. She used her authority to push Billy around with ultimately turned to his demise. I believe each patient in that hospital was deamed "insane" by society just by their personalities or handicaps (ie; Billy's studder). Circumstantually, patient's would act out and throw tantrums, but it's reasonable for their environment because they're treated as if they're the scum of society, not as if they truly need help. I don't believe Chief was mentally ill either, but a genius. He was sent to the hospital because he killed his father after his labotomy. He did the same to McMurphy at the end of the movie too. But isn't that the same thing as pulling the plug on someone who will be a vegetable for the rest of their lives after a tragic accident?
Overall, the movie was very good and it is open to interpretations from anyone who watches it. This movie was probably the best movie I've seen in school because it's so raw, realistic and emotional.

  11. personally, i love nurse ratchet's choking face. but genuinely, the film is fantastic in all respects. i love the ending, and i loved the subtle implications of identity and spirituality with the native american music at the end and at the beginning. Chief was from the beginning my favorite character, and his running off into the distance in the end is a rare instance of perfect cinematography. The hills, the forest, even the lighting of the sun is perfect. I wonder how long it took to get that shot. regardless, i was genuinely disturbed by mcmurphy's fate. it just goes to show you, that you can push and push and push, but when you push, they can finally break you. The key is to do as chief does: leave. The concepts brought forth are beautiful and poignant, and the cinematography is nigh perfect. truly one of the greatest movies of all time.

  12. I loved the ending to the movie. It really made sense and connected why Chief was in there, what happened to him and what happened to McMurphy. Chief has been in that institution for years because he thought he was small, didn't have the strength to take care of himself. But McMurphy gave him that strength, and even though McMurphy is dead, he will always live through Chief. The other men in the ward will now have that courage that McMurphy brought them when he was alive, even though he is dead. Knowing there is a way to escape and get better. The end of the movie was great.
