One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, part 2

Now that you have observed all the main characters (McMurphy, Chief, Harding, Bibbitt, Martini, Cheswick, and Taber) a little, tell me if you think they have a mental illness. I know we are not ready to label them something specific, but we can describe their behavior and decide if they need psychiatric treatment. So go ahead and describe each character and their problems, if any.

Please post by Thursday, December 15.

I do believe that most of these people have a mental illness. Like Bibbitt who attempted suicide. And when Nurse Ratched brought up the suicide attempt of Bibbitt, she said the first time he tried to committ suicide. So you can infer he has tried it more that once so he probably does have a mental illness. I do not think Chief has a mental illness, he may just not be able to talk or is just plain shy. I am not sure about Taber. I think Martini and Cheswick have mental illness by the way they act. Like when Cheswick threw a fit because he didnt have his cigarets.

  2. I do believe that these characters have mental issues, however, I also believe that a lot of these problems are caused by the difficult environment and various situations that these individuals are placed in. I cannot recall the actor who was whining for his cigarettes and put up a fit over them, but this individual for example had a right to put up an argument and fit, considering he is a full grown adult having his decisions being made for him without concent. It is clear that he has an obvious mental condition, but normally wouldn't have acted in that particular manner under his "normal", everyday environment. Compared to a mentally stable "normal" person, these individuals are not seen as menally stable, but they are far from worst case scenario.

  3. No I don't believe they have a mental illness. I believe they are all fine and its all in they're head. Chief can't hear but that doesn't mean he's mental it just means he can't hear. The boy who tried to kill himself isn't crazy he just made a big move in his life and was crushed by the outcome and could live with it. The man who was acting childish and throwing a tantrum over his cigarettes. He was acting like a little child because he's treated as if he is a child by people. And finally the man who thinks his wife is cheating on him isn't crazy because he has a fear that is common with all people men and women. Everyone of the men in the movie are not mentally ill they just are treated like they are and because of that they believe they are. Nurse Rachet manipulates the patients minds by speaking curtain ways to them which makes them believe they are sick and belong at the ward.

  4. I do not believe that any of these patients are mentally ill for a couple reasons. To begin, most/all of them are in that mental institution by their own CHOICE. Mentally ill people do not even know most of the time that they have an issue. I am not excusing the fact that they all have other issue indeed, yet their circumstances in my opinion should not make them feel as though they belong in a mental institution. Their stories and their individual attitudes displayed in the institution are probably due to lack of attention from others. I really do not believe that any of them, besides McMurphy belong there anymore. Maybe they all did need to be there for a short amount of time, but they are probably afraid to leave because they feel that it is there comfort zone, and some place that they are safe from their problems.

Some patients in that hospital need to be in there for their safety and for others safety. However, i believe there is a hand few that don't deserve to be in there. Like chief, the only thing I notice about him, is he cant hear. That is not a mental disorder, its just bad luck. When somebody cant hear, they don't function well but that does not list them as mentally un-stable. Also, about billy, he does not deserve to be in there. He has a huge stutter and he is socially awkward. He might sound mentally unstable but that does not make him.

  6. I don't really remember which character is which. However I do think they are all very clever, and I would compare the treatment they get from the directors of the ward as someone with a mental disability would receive. They are treated as little children. The leader of the pack, McMurphy (I think) in my opinion definitely does not have a mental illness. He messed up and made an accident, which everyone does and if anything he should be in jail, not in a Psych Ward. The one who cries for his ciggarettes, its hard to tell but he seems mentally stable for the most part, except when he threw a tantrum for the cigs. I do think the one who tried to kill himself, the one Ms. Ratchett called out in front of everyone, does have a mental illness and should be in there. Or, he should at least be on suicide watch. I think most of the guys in there are okay, but then again compare them to an average person in the normal society, and one might think they do not belong there. Which is sort of true, so it is safe to say they do belong somewhere in between, however that does not exist. I did not see Part 1, so I hope my excessive amount of blogging on this one and The Ending will make up for it.

  7. I also agree with Mitchell on the comment about the Cheif. He is a native american person who can't hear, so how does that make any sense for him to be in there? That is not a mental disorder. However, I don't know if the right testing or hearing aids were invented back then

  8. I disagree with Lara because just because they are there by CHOICE does not mean they do not have a mental problem. It takes some guts to admit that you need help, and if that's what they did and they admitted themselves then maybe it's for the better.

  9. However, I don't know how long some of them have been in there for, but if the majority of them were admitted by choice, then after a certain period of time they should be let out.

  10. Question of the day: If you admit yourself into a mental hospital by choice, can you let yourself out by choice?

  11. I feel that the men in this institution are half and half. Some genuinely have a mental illness. Like bibbet he tried to commit suicide, like drew said I think he has a legitimate problem in his like that makes him have this turmoil. Others like harding I feel only stay there becuase they aren't crazy but have trouble overcoming lives challenges. A common theme that relates to this is the problem of underdeveloped social skills. This is what makes them stay in the institution because they feel superior and more normal than the actual crazy people who are there. Martini might have some problem, I think he is actually there because he has a mental illness and psychiatric treatment would be a good thing for him. On the other hand you have people like mcmurphy who are just trying to play the system and get off easy. A person who I feel is normal on the outside but crazy on the inside is cheswick. I am still trying to decide whether it was a mental illness making him freak out or if it was just him being fed up with the nurse. I do think some are there for true mental problems I think others are there because of some social barrier or life challenge they can't overcome.

  12. Like i few people have already siad i do not believe that these people are crazy or mental. I believe these people all have unexplained issues that they do not know how to cope with. I believe that if they were able to identify their problems they would be a completly differ4ent person. So like i said i do not believe these people are crazy they just need to laern how to deal with their problems.

  13. Lara there is no way McMurphy belongs there. He's not insane at all. He just went there to avoid being somebody's wife in the slammer. Anywho, I think some of them are actually sick. Like the guy who "just wanted his cigarettes". A normal person doesn't throw that type of fit over a cigarette. Bibbet is normal he just stutters. And Doc is normal too I think. He seems to just be an instigator.

Yes, I believe that they are mentally ill and i dont think it would be fair that they are put on the streets and left to face situations that a mentaly stable person would face and could* face. I dont believe though, that they belong in a place like that. They are truly not given any treatment what theya re doing, in my opinion is making them crazier. Noone should ever be treated like that and the things they are put through are in-humaine. They need to talk one on one with a true* doctor and helped in a way that they can use in a normal situatuion. Throwing a temper tantrom and crying over cigarettes is rediculous and you can argue that they would never be in a situation like that if they were on the street but IF by the slight chance they were, It would just get them into trouble. I dont however believe McMurphy should be in that 'hospital'. But billy, who has attempted suiside, should have someone talking with him for a while to help him realize that it isnt worth it etc. 95% of those men need help, but the help they are getting isnt going to do anything but numb them and make them forget not only about the problem, but who they are

  15. The only crazy one is McMurphy. He is the only one who questions society, and really the only one who puts up any sort of resistance to authority. The ironic thing here, is that in this microcosm of society, McMurphy is the sick one because he doesn't follow the rules. This is precisely why all of the others are in the hospital: they never followed the rules of society. Honestly, i would say that the only person here who is truly mentally ill is Nurse WRETCHED (did you see what I did there?), as the lust for power that she has is nothing but sheer cruelty and a desire to manipulate and keep power, which is in and of itself a symptom of psychosis. crazy broad.

I have not had a chance to see the middle of the movie, but from what i have seen, i can truely say that bobby bibbit, Harding, and tabor all seem mentally sane, they just are socially awkward or have different way of thinking. I really believe that people like them may have to have a private therapist to analyze their symptoms and perscribe individual medications and not one generic drug. Our society is very much brought up from there, but they were all very misdiagnosed and mistreated

  17. mcmurphy is not a psychopath, he is a sociopath. he has a fully functioning frontal lobe, but he uses his wits to manipulate his wardmates in much the same way as the nurse does.

harding has - at the very least - some very serious anger issues. when anyone brings up the topic of his wife, or starts "fooling with him" he quickly looses his temper and sometimes has bouts of rage that are worthy of commitment to the institution.

billy is not mentally ill, he has problems in his social interactions like mcmurphy. mcmurphy's problem is that he's too dominant and tends to manipulate others, billy's is the opposite issue. he is too easily influenced by others and has trouble expressing himself or taking control of social situtations.

martini and cheswick... are deffinately developmentally challenged.

taber is interesting, he is either a totally sane man - and a total jerk - or he is a sociopath like mcmurphy.

  19. I do believe some of these men are mentally ill. Not all of them however. McMurphy I feel suffers from some sort of anger management issues but I don't feel he is severely mentally ill and should be in an institution. Billy Bibbit on the other hand is definitely mentally ill. He is suicidal. He is socially messed up as well. He has a hard time with people particularly women. He also has some sort of phobia with his mother. He is Definitely mentally ill. Cheswick is also mentally ill, he acts as if he is two years old. He is clingy, and whiny and any little thing sets him off. He wanted a cigarette and he had a complete melt down. Harding is not mentally ill I feel like, I think he has issues with himself personally which cause him to be self conscious and act differently. Taber I don't think is mentally ill either. I just think he's kind of like that annoying bully you have in your second grade class who has ADHD, he doesn't seem to me mentally ill. And last is Martini, at first I thought he was mentally ill, the way he acted like a two year old made me think he had a mental illness. But he's not, I feel he suffers from mental retardation.
